psychedelic rock

Pop music that usually involves advanced electronic equipment for both light and sound. The free-form improvisations and light shows that appeared about 1966, attempting to suggest or improve on mind-altering drug experiences, had by the 1980s evolved into stadium performances with lasers and other special effects. Examples of psychedelic rock include the Doors, Pink Floyd, and the Grateful Dead.

The swirling organ riffs and multilayered guitar-and-feedback washes in some 1980s and 1990s indie rock come from 1960s psychedelic rock.
