Psychodidae

Insect family that comprises the moth flies, sewage flies, and sandflies.

Classification

Psychodidae is in the order Diptera class Insecta, phylum Arthropoda.

They are small delicate flies with dense hairs covering the body and the pointed wings, with characteristic venation. The male genitalia are prominent. The eggs are laid in cracks and crevices, and the characteristic larva has four developmental stages. The adults are small flies with biting mouthparts. Only the females feed.

The family is divided into two subfamilies, Psychodinae and Phlebotominae. The subfamily Phlebotominae are the sandflies and are vectors of leishmaniasis.
