public corporation

Management and administrative structure, similar to a private corporation, established to run state-owned or nationalized enterprises. Public corporations are governed by a board of directors, although some level of government is either the sole or controlling stockholder.

Distinct from a publicly-held corporation, where shares are sold to the public, then traded in one of the stock markets, public corporations decline in number as the trend toward privatization grows.
