pueblo

Settlement of flat-roofed stone or adobe houses that are the communal dwelling houses of the Hopi, Zuni, and other American Indians of Arizona and New Mexico. The word has also come to refer to the pueblo-dwelling American Indians of the southwest themselves.

Typical pueblos are the Taos, San Ildefonso, and Zuni pueblos in New Mexico. Many pueblos produce distinctive wares such as inlaid silver jewellery, pottery, drums, carvings and weavings - the black-on-black pottery of San Ildefonso Pueblo is well-known.
