Puerto Cortés

Chief port of Honduras, situated on the northwest coast, and the country's westernmost major Caribbean town; population (1995) 79,000. The town lies at the mouth of the Ulúa River, 290 km/180 mi northwest of Tegucigalpa. Puerto Cortés handles over half of Honduras's shipping trade exports. The town has a small oil refinery. There are many beaches and an ancient fortress.
