Puerto Madryn

Sheltered desert port in the southern province of Chubut, Argentina; population (1996) 55,000. Puerto Madryn stands on the Golfo Nuevo, in the lee of the Valdés peninsula. A large plant for processing bauxite into alumina is situated here, together with fishmeal and canning factories. The main agricultural exports are cattle, sheep, mutton, and wool.

The town is becoming a popular tourist centre, with a casino, and skin-diving and nature reserves, such as the wildlife sanctuary of Penínsul Valdés. Puerto Madryn was founded by the Welsh Patagonian colonist Parry Madryn in 1865.
