Puerto Montt

Port and capital of the Llanquihue province and the Los Lagos region in south-central Chile, 900 km/559 mi south of Santiago; population (1996) 128,537. Puerto Montt stands on an imposing natural bay (Seno Reloncaví), and is the terminus of the north–south railway. The port is much used by coastal shipping and serves a sheep-farming district. Leather, wheat, and timber are exported from here.

It is the point of embarkation for Puerto Natales, a 1,460 km/907 mi journey south, and also a popular centre for exploring the Chilean lake district to the north.

Puerto Montt was founded in 1852 by German settlers to the region. The Pan-American Highway used to end here, but was extended by over 1,000 km/621 mi in 1988.
