Pugachev, Emelyan Ivanovich (1726–1775)

Cossack leader of a popular rebellion in Russia during the reign of Catherine (II) the Great. He proclaimed himself Emperor Peter III in 1773 and issued a manifesto promising the liberation of the serfs. Many Cossacks, peasants, and nomadic Bashkirs and Kazakhs took part in the rebellion, which spread over the Volga area and the Urals. Pugachev's rebellion continued until the end of 1774. After the destruction of his army and his court, Pugachev was carried to captivity in a cage, and executed by quartering.
