Pugwash

Group of scientists working towards nuclear disarmament. It came into being 1954 following a suggestion by Bertrand Russell to Polish physicist Joseph Rotblat. The name derives from the Nova Scotian town where the first meeting was held. Pugwash shared the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize with Rotblat.

The Pugwash conference in 1961 included both the US presidential science adviser and the vice-president of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and led to a follow-on discussion with President Kennedy on a nuclear test ban ( a test-ban treaty was signed in 1963).
