Pune

City in Maharashtra state, India, 100 km/60 mi southeast of Mumbai (formerly Bombay) on the Mutha River; population (2001 est) 2,540,100. Products include chemicals, rubber, rice, sugar, cotton, paper, and jewellery. Industries include cars, trucks, scooters, and motorbikes; pumps, cables, machinery, arms and ammunitions, cutting tools, televisions, boilers, and generators. The city is a major centre for higher education, the home of some 30 colleges, each of which forms part of or is affliliated to the University of Pune, while the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (1917) specializes in ancient languages.

It was the Maratha capital in the 18th century and a British hill resort in the 19th and 20th. The university was founded in 1948, the Armed Forces Medical College is here, and the National Defence Academy is situated at nearby Khadakvasla.
