Puri

Coastal city in Orissa, east India, 50 km/30 mi south of Bhubaneshwar; population (2001) 157,600. It is a religious centre with a temple dedicated to Jagganath or Vishnu, one of the three gods of Hinduism. A statue of the god, dating from about 318, is annually taken in procession on a large vehicle (hence the word ‘juggernaut’ used for a very large lorry). Devotees formerly threw themselves beneath its wheels.
