Ube

City in Yamaguchi prefecture, southwest of Honshu island, Japan; population (1995 est) 175,100. The city is situated on the coast, near Shimonoseki, and near the Ube coalfields, which closed in 1967. Ube is an important centre of the chemical and heavy industries, and its products include soda, sulphuric acid, cement, metals, machinery, cotton textiles, magnesium, and fertilizers. Much of the industry is located on reclaimed land.

Ube is served by a modern harbour through which local industrial products are exported.

The owners of Cendrillion will open a Korean restaurant, Purple Yam, at 1314 Cortelyou Road in Ditmas Park.
A full-service supermarket -- Seafood City -- opened just over a month ago and offers live seafood and ethnic specialties such as ube, a purple yam.
Purple Yam, a Pan-Asian restaurant, is set to open in July at 1314 Cortelyou Road between Argyle and East 14th streets in Ditmas Park.
