Putnam, Israel (1718–1790)

American soldier who was a veteran of service with the Connecticut militia during the French and Indian War. He became an early opponent of British rule. In the American Revolution he was appointed major general of Continental forces in 1775 and fought at Bunker Hill.

He was born in Salem Village (now Danvers), Massachusetts. A paralytic stroke forced his retirement from the army in 1779.
