Pyatigorsk

Town in the Stavropol krai (territory) in northern Caucasia, southwestern Russian Federation; population (1996 est) 134,000. It lies at the foot of Mount Mashuk. Pyatigorsk is a major health resort and cultural centre. Industries include the production of agricultural machinery and electrical goods.

Pyatigorsk was founded in 1780 as the fort of Konstantinovskaya, and has been a spa since 1803. The poet Mikhail Lermontov was killed in a duel near here in 1841.

Courts gave Anton (Abdullah) Stepanenko, an imam in Pyatigorsk (Stavropol Region), a suspended sentence, partially for inciting religious hatred.
