Pyay

Town of Bago (Pegu) division, Myanmar, situated on the Irrawaddy River, 260 km/162 mi northwest of Yangon (Rangoon); population (2001 est) 123,800. There are forests in the surrounding area, and rice, cotton, and tobacco are grown; light industries include paper and silk-weaving, and the manufacture of ornamental boxes.

Close to Pyay are the 7th-century ruins of Sri Ksetra, the ancient Pyu capital of Thayekhittaya, where archaeologists have discovered traces of a city wall embracing an area of 47 sq km/18sq mi, larger than that of either Pagan or Mandalay. The Sri Ksetra ruins include the Shwesandaw pagoda, which is surrounded by 83 smaller gilded temples.
