Pyrénées Orientales

Département in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France; area 4,086 sq km/1,578 sq mi; population (1999 est) 392,800. It comprises the western end of the Pyrenees, and is extremely mountainous, except for the plain of Roussillon in the east. The chief rivers are the Tet and the Tech. Vines, olives, vegetables, and fruit are grown, and livestock is raised. There are metallurgical and chemical industries, and a number of hydroelectric schemes. The principal towns are the administrative capital Perpignan, Ceret, and Prades.

Pyrénées Orientales was formed from the old province of Roussillon, and of part of Languedoc.
