QALY

QALY

In medicine, a measure derived by health economists to indicate the likely effectiveness of a particular treatment. It can contribute to the assessment of treatment and care that a patient receives.

Values for the QALY are sometimes given in reports of clinical trials. For example, intense chemotherapy and radiotherapy may be used in patients with advanced cancer to prolong life for a few months but the quality of that life may be very poor.
