Qaidam

Sandy swamp region in Qinghai province, northwest China, lying to the west of Lake Qinghai. The region was once the bed of a vast salt lake. Oilfields have been worked since 1956 at Lenghu and a refinery developed. Salt is mined at Ukan and asbestos at Da Qaidam. Phosphates and other chemicals are extracted from the dried-out lake bed.
