Qu'Appelle River

Also found in: Encyclopedia, Wikipedia 0.02 sec.

Qu'Appelle River

River in southern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba; length 430 km/270 mi. It flows from Diefenbaker Lake on the South Saskatchewan River, northwest of Moose Jaw, and winds east across Saskatchewan, north of Regina and past Fort Qu'Appelle, to join the Assiniboine River just over the Manitoba border.

The Qu'Appelle valley is agricultural, and is especially well known for its cultivation of soft fruit. The river's name comes from a Cree legend, which tells of a young man who thought he heard his name being called, and responded, Qu'appelle? (‘Who is calling?’); only later did he learn that what he had heard was the dying breath of his lover.
