quadrant

One quarter of a circle. When plotting coordinates on a graph, the x- and y-axes may intersect to create four quadrants. The first quadrant lies in the region where both x and y are positive.

The remaining three quadrants are numbered in an anticlockwise direction. Thus in the second quadrant, x is negative and y is positive, in the third quadrant, both are negative and in the fourth quadrant x is positive and y negative.
