quagga

South African zebra that became extinct in the 1880s. It was brown, with a white tail and legs, and unlike surviving zebra species, had stripes only on its head, neck, and forequarters.

In the early 1980s DNA extracted from the skin of a stuffed quagga was found to be identical to that of the common zebra Equus burchelli, proving that the quagga was not a separate species but a subspecies of zebra. In 1987 the Quagga Project Committee was formed to attempt to recreate a quagga through selective breeding of E. burchelli. By 1998 the project consisted of 53 zebras with significant reduction in stripy markings on the body.
