cliometrics

The use of statistics to measure and quantify the salient elements of an economy. The data produced are sometimes used to construct hypothetical models where one element is removed and the consequences then measured. These methods, associated with the ‘new economic history’, have been used to study the economic impact of railways in Britain and, more controversially, slavery in the USA.
