Alternative spelling of Guangzhou or Kwangchow, capital of Guangdong province in China.

In France, an administrative district, a subdivision of the arrondissement; in Switzerland, one of the 23 subdivisions forming the Confederation.

Canton

City and administrative headquarters of Stark County, northeast Ohio, USA, on Nimishillen Creek, 84 km/52 mi southeast of Cleveland; population (2000) 80,800. The city is a major producer of metal alloys and steel. Other manufactures include metalworking presses, roller bearings, brick, and rubber gloves. It is also a trade centre for the surrounding dairy and poultry farming region.

Canton was laid out in 1805 and incorporated as a city in 1854. It is the site of Malone College (1892) and Walsh College (1958), and was the home of President William McKinley, who is buried here. The city now houses the National Professional Football Hall of Fame.
