quartet

Ensemble of four musicians, or the music written for such a group. The most common type of quartet is the string quartet.

At last season's launch the Doric String Quartet stepped in at the last minute to cover for the Michelangelo Quartet - and on October 7 the society respects that gesture by engaging the 2008 Osaka Music Competition winners to open the new six-concert season with quartets by Mozart, Prokofiev and Mendelssohn.
But if intense drama is to be expected in performances of Schubert and Shostakovich, it is somewhat less usual with Haydn quartets.
In the analogue era, the single string quartets by Debussy and Ravel, composed in 1893 and 1903 respectively, were an obvious and common combination, comfortably filling one LP.
