body mass index

In medicine, calculation of weight to height ratio that is a useful method of assessing whether an individual is underweight or obese. It is calculated using the formula:

BMI = weight (kg)/height2 (m2)

Normal values for the BMI in adults are between 20 and 25. Values below 20 indicate that an individual is underweight and values above 30 indicate that an individual is obese. These values can be compared with extensive data obtained from life insurance companies to determine the risk of morbidity or mortality of a particular individual.
