Quedlinburg

Town in the Land (administrative region) of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, on the River Bode, on the northeastern edge of the Harz Mountains, 68 km/42 mi northwest of Halle; population (2001 est) 25,000. Quedlinburg has a research centre for plant biology and a horticultural industry, and manufactures machinery and chemicals. The town is a fine example of a medieval European settlement and is a major tourist destination.

Quedlinburg was founded by the Holy Roman Emperor Henry I around 922, and later became a member of the Hanseatic League medieval trade federation. It was incorporated into Brandenburg in 1698.

Quedlinburg is overlooked by a medieval convent and has a 10th–12th-century church, which contains the tombs of Henry I and his wife Matilda. It has 1,200 half-timbered houses, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The poet Friedrich Klopstock and the geographer Karl Ritter were born in the town.
