Opera by Tchaikovsky (libretto by M I Tchaikovsky, Tchaikovsky's brother, based on Pushkin's story) produced at St Petersburg on 19 December 1890. The story concerns Hermann, who tries to find the secret of playing cards through the old Countess. She dies but her ghost reveals the winning combination to him. But after rejecting Lisa, the Countess's grand-daughter, Hermann loses everything at the gambling table when his necessary ace turns out to be the queen of spades instead.
