question mark

Punctuation mark (?) used to indicate an enquiry, placed at the end of a direct question (‘Who is coming?’) or an implied question (‘This is my reward?’). A question mark is never needed at the end of an indirect question (‘He asked us who was coming’), since this is a statement. To express doubt, a writer or editor may insert a question mark (‘born in ? 1235’), often in brackets.

question mark

Wild card character standing for any single character in most operating systems. It allows a user to specify a group of files whose names differ by only one character for mass handling. Typing ‘dir part?.doc’ in a DOS directory would display a list of files such as part1.doc, party.doc, and so on. The letter ‘x’ is often used to mean the same thing.
