Qufu

Town in Shandong province, China; urban population (1994 est) 117,500, total population (1994 est) 611,800. Qufu was capital of the state of Lu during the Zhou dynasty (1066–256 BC). In 551 BC it was the birthplace of the sage Confucius. The Great Temple of Confucius is sited here, and his tomb lies to the north of the temple.
