Quilmes

Highly industrialized suburb of Buenos Aires, Argentina; population (1996) 509,445. Quilmes lies some 15 km/9 mi southeast of the centre of the capital. It has one of the world's largest breweries; its other products include textiles, ironware, rayon, and glass; there are also oil refineries here.

Quilmes derives its name from the Quilmes people, who were forcibly relocated here from Tucumán province in northwest Argentina in 1667.
