Quin, James (1693–1766)

Irish actor. Having made his name at Drury Lane Theatre, London, in Nicholas Rowe's Tamerlane in 1715, he appeared at Lincoln's Inn Fields 1716–30. The rest of his career was divided between Covent Garden and Drury Lane. He excelled as Falstaff in Henry IV.

Quin was acknowledged to be the finest tragic actor in England until the appearance of David Garrick in 1741.
