Quitman

Seat of Wood County, northeastern Texas, USA, 120 km/75 mi east of Dallas; population (1990) 1,700. It is an oil and agricultural centre; the Quitman Oilfield was opened in 1942. In the 1870s it was the home of James Hogg, who edited a newspaper in 1873, and went on to become governor 1891–95 and the head of a Texas political dynasty.
