quoits

Game in which a rubber, rope, or metal ring (quoit) is thrown at a peg (hob) from a point 16.5 m/54 ft away. The player whose quoit lands nearest the hob, within a circle 1 m/3 ft in diameter, gains one point. A quoit that encircles the hob is called a ringer and is worth two points.

Hearts and Hibs drew 1-1 in the semifinal at Tynecastle, on March 9,1901, in front of 20,000, but football had to compete for coverage with the big sports of the day - quoiting, draughts, whist and coursing.
Now, 100 years after the original bet, the obscure sport of quoiting is still practised and celebrated between members of Liverpool Cricket Club and Childwall Quoiting Club.
For 20 years, the Scottish Quoiting Association has been trying to gain recognition from them.
