Quorn

Town in South Australia, located 330 km/205 mi north of Adelaide; population (1996) 1,000. Quorn has a number of historic buildings, including the Quorn Mill (1878), built at the height of a wheat boom. Major industries include the production cereal crops, sheep rearing, and agricultural services.

The district was first settled in the 1850s, and in the 1870s a town servicing the local wheat industry began to emerge. The town was officially proclaimed in 1878. In 1879 a railway through Pichi Richi pass to the north was opened and Quorn became an important railway town. The line was closed in 1957, but reopened as a working museum in 1974.
