rhythm and blues

Style of popular music developed in the USA during the 1940s–60s. It drew on swing and jazz rhythms and blues vocals, and was an important influence on rock and roll. It diversified into soul, funk, and other styles. R & B artists include Bo Diddley, Jackie Wilson, and Etta James.
