Komárno

River port and border town in southwest Slovak Republic, at the confluence of the rivers Váh and Danube; population (2001) 37,400. Textile manufacturing and shipbuilding are its chief industries. Formerly a strategic stronghold, until 1920 the port was part of Hungarian Komárom on the south bank; it remains connected by bridge.

Komarno's fortifications were constructed in the 15th century by King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary. Zitnyostrov Castle is surrounded by branches of the river. The composer Franz Lehár was born in the town.
