Río Gallegos

Capital of the province of Santa Cruz in Patagonia, southern Argentina; population (1996) 65,000. One of the the few towns in the sparsely populated region of Patagonia, Río Gallegos is a deep-water port on the estuary of the River Gallegos. Its main exports are by-products of the extensive sheep farming undertaken in the hinterland, such as tallow, wool, sheepskins, and refrigerated meat. Coal is another important export, transported here from the largest coalfields in Argentina, on the Chilean border at Río Turbio.

Río Gallegos was founded in 1885. It is the site of a major military base, which was used to support the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) in 1982.
