rhythm and blues

Style of popular music developed in the USA during the 1940s-60s. It drew on swing and jazz rhythms and blues vocals, and was an important influence on rock and roll. It diversified into soul, funk, and other styles. R & B artists include Bo Diddley, Jackie Wilson, and Etta James.
