Racibórz

Industrial town in Katowice province, Poland, on the River Oder, 65 km/41 mi south of Opole; population (2001 est) 63,700. There are engineering, chemical, magnetite, pharmaceutical, agri-business, and brewing industries.

The settlement was chartered in 1217. It was ruled by the Habsburg Empire from 1526, then by the Prussians from 1745. Between the wars, it formed part of the area of Silesia retained by Germany, which became part of Poland following World War II.
