Rackham, Arthur (1867–1939)

English illustrator. Influenced by art nouveau, he developed an ornate and delicate style. He illustrated a wide range of books, but is best remembered for his illustrations for children's classics, including Peter Pan (1906) and Andersen's Fairy Tales (1932).

Educated at the City of London School and Lambeth School of Art, in his twenties Rackham drew illustrations for journals such as Pall Mall and Graphic. Among the many books he illustrated are Rip Van Winkle (1905), Dickens's A Christmas Carol (1915), The Sleeping Beauty (1920), The Vicar of Wakefield (1929), The Compleat Angler (1931), The Arthur Rackham Fairy Book (1933), The Pied Piper of Hamelin (1934), and Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery (1935).

Rackham was given conditional bail, which included reporting at a police station twice a week, and told to surrender his passport.
Topics include The Black Book at a key to popular piety in the wake of the Reformation, storytelling in Greenland today, hunting for legends and reindeer, Arthur Rackham and the ballads, prolegomena to a non-extant translation of Det graa Hus, the adventures of David Copperfield in Nova Scotia, and Isak Dinesen and the lessons of Scheherazade.
But perhaps the biggest disappointment was Jack Rackham.
