Radcliffe, Ann (1764–1823)

English novelist. An exponent of the gothic novel or ‘romance of terror’, she wrote, for example, The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794). She excelled in depicting scenes of mystery and terror, and was one of the first novelists to include vivid descriptions of landscape and weather.

Her other novels include A Sicilian Romance (1790), The Romance of the Forest 1791, and The Italian (1797). Her work was very popular in her day.

She was born in London and in 1787 married William Radcliffe, later editor and proprietor of the English Chronicle, a weekly newspaper.
