Radetzky, Josef Wenzel, Count von Radetzky

    0.01 sec.

Radetzky, Josef Wenzel, Count von Radetzky (1766–1858)

Austrian soldier. He served throughout the Turkish and revolutionary wars, taking part in the battles of Trebbia, Novi, Marengo, Aspern, Wagram, and Leipzig. From 1831 he commanded the Austrian army in Italy and his fame rests on his masterly defence of the Quadrilateral, and his subsequent crushing victories at Custozza and Novara over Charles Albert, king of Sardinia, during 1848–49.

Radetzky was born in Trebnice, Bohemia, and joined the army in 1785. His military successes, which saved Austria from collapse, were commemorated in the Radetzky march by Johann Strauss the Elder.
