Radford, Arthur

Radford, Arthur (William) (1896–1973)

US naval officer. He commanded a carrier group that played a notable role in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaigns. He was vice chief of naval operations 1948–49 and commander of the Pacific Fleet 1949–53. He protested at what he saw as a reduction of the navy's importance and was chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff 1953–57.

He was born in Chicago.
