Raffles, (Thomas) Stamford (1781-1826)

British colonial administrator, born in Jamaica. He served in the British East India Company, took part in the capture of Java from the Dutch in 1811, and while governor of Sumatra 1818-23 was responsible for the acquisition and founding of Singapore in 1819. He was knighted in 1817.
