Ragusa

Town in Sicily, Italy, 54 km/34 mi southwest of Syracuse; population (1990) 69,400. It stands over 450 m/1,500 ft above the River Ragusa. There are textile industries, asphalt mines, and oil has been discovered in the district. Nearby caves contain ancient tombs.

The ridge on which the town is built narrows at one point to divide the upper, modern town from the older, lower town of Ragusa Ibla, which has baroque and medieval palaces and churches, including a cathedral. It is believed to occupy the site of ancient Hybla Heraea.

Ragusa

Italian name (to 1918) for the Croatian city of Dubrovnik. Its English name was Arrogosa, from which the word ‘argosy’ is derived, because of the city's fame for its trading fleets while under Turkish rule in the 16th century.

Ragusa

Province of Italy in southeast Sicily; capital Ragusa; area 1,614 sq km/623 sq mi; population (2000 est) 301,900.
