Rahway

Town in Union County, northeast New Jersey; population (1990) 25,300. It is situated on the Rahway River, 10 km/6 mi southwest of Elizabeth. Settled in the early 18th century as a part of Elizabethtown, it was the scene of several skirmishes during the Revolution. The manufacture of pharmaceuticals is one of the city's oldest and most economically important industries. Other products include soap and soap dispensers, automobile parts, batteries, chemicals, and vacuum cleaners. A Revolutionary cemetery and a state prison farm are in Rahway.
