Raiftearaí, Antoine

    0.07 sec.

Raiftearaí (or Ó Reachtabhra), Antoine (c. 1780–1835)

Irish versifier and wandering minstrel. Born in Killedan (Cill Liadáin), near Kiltimagh, County Mayo, he was blinded in childhood as a result of smallpox infection. A character surrounded by folkloric rumour and gossip, his songs and poetry were revitalized by Isabella Augusta Gregory and W B Yeats during the Gaelic literary revival. His best-known works are ‘Mise Raiftearaí/I am Raftery’, a self-lament; and ‘Bua Uí Chonaill’, a poem about Daniel O'Connell's 1828 election victory, which typifies Raiftearaí's strongly Catholic stance.
