rainmaker

Person believed to control the weather by magic, employed especially to bring rain. Belief in rainmakers is common in Africa, Australia, and among some American Indians in arid parts of the USA.

Rainmakers may be important people in the community, and the authority of chiefs or kings may rest largely upon this power. Rain is usually made by the manipulation of rain stones or other sacred objects, or by prayer.

rainmaker

In business, a person who is very successful. In particular, a rainmaker is adept at bringing in new business to a company. The use of the term is derived from its conventional meaning of a person who is able to produce rain through artificial means. The importance of rain to farming is mirrored in the importance of new business to companies.
