Rains, Claude (1889–1967)

British-born US character actor. He played opposite Bette Davis in Now, Voyager (1942), Mr Skeffington (1945), and Deception (1946), and portrayed suave and sardonic figures such as the police chief in Casablanca (1942).

On the London stage from the age of 11, Rains graduated to Broadway and then Hollywood. He achieved success with his first film role as the unseen hero of The Invisible Man (1933); later roles include Prince John in Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) and the mother-dominated Nazi in Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious (1946).
