Rains Retreat

Time of annual retreat in Theravāda Buddhism. The term originates from the time of the Buddha preventing bhikkus (Buddhist monks) from travelling during the rainy season of India and Southeast Asia. It is a three-month period during which monks stay in the monastery to concentrate on the teachings of the Buddha. Male novices will also be received at this time to undertake an initial period of study.
